Expanding Horizons: Japan Canada Organic Equivalency Arrangement Now Includes Organic Alcoholic Beverages

Get ready for an exciting development in the world of organics! The Government of Canada is taking a step forward by broadening its organic equivalency arrangement with Japan. Starting from August 31, 2023, you will find organic alcoholic beverages within the scope of this arrangement.

This significant stride builds upon the original equivalency agreement established between Canada and Japan on January 1, 2015. This landmark agreement recognized the organic production and certification systems of both nations as being on par. The journey continued in July 2020, with the inclusion of organic livestock products and processed foods containing organic livestock ingredients under this agreement.

As of August 31, a whole new realm of possibilities opens up. Organic alcoholic beverages certified under the Canada Organic Regime or the Japanese organic system can now be proudly showcased and labeled as organic in both Canada and Japan. This exciting development enhances consumer choices, offering more organic options while also expanding the Canadian organic industry’s market access within Japan.

The story began on January 1, 2015, with the inception of the original equivalency arrangement between Canada and Japan, which recognized the equivalence of both countries; organic production and certification systems. In July 2020, this tale progressed with the inclusion of organic livestock products and processed foods containing organic livestock ingredients under the same arrangement.

With the addition of organic alcoholic beverages to the mix, beginning August 31, a new chapter unfolds. The Canada Organic Regime and the Japanese organic system have united to offer consumers across both nations the privilege of enjoying organic certified beverages.

This step not only enriches consumer choices but also opens new avenues for the Canadian organic industry in the Japanese market.
